i. ARRIVAL

It was a beautiful dream, complete with a sobering and tantalizing choice.

The awakening is just as beautiful, and you wake slowly, comfortably and completely on your own time, eyes blinking open to take in the surroundings. You are floating in the center of a pool of pink-tinted liquid, just a little thicker than water, just thick enough that the floating takes no effort. Dressed in a soft white cotton robe, you find yourself staring at the high domed ceiling of a round room lined with huge windows that let in the afternoon sunlight, a little pale and washed out with the cool midwinter temperature and the reflection of light snowfall outside.

Inside, it is warm, the liquid you float in close enough to your body temperature that you can barely feel it as it moves over your skin. Thick vines climb the walls, weaving in and out between the windows and occasionally over them, throwing thick organically-shaped stripes here and there across the room. Once you fully awaken and stand up and exit the water, you will find towels to dry yourself beside a neatly stacked bundle of your clothing (all very precisely mended) and any other items you might have had on your person when you made the decision to stay. You are left alone, given time to sort yourself out and get changed, and it is only when you decide to leave the antechamber with the pool through a single open arch and make your way into the courtyard of the castle that you will be approached.

The people who greet you are warm and welcoming, wearing robes of different colors depending on the House they're affiliated with - green for Life, blue for River, brown for Stone, and yellow for Sun. These representatives explain to you where you are and what you've agreed to and answer any questions you might have. After this conversation, you are given your tablet and walked through how to use it, then taken on a tour through the various House accommodations so you can choose which suits you best, and offered to be taken to the stables should you have a mount, large pet, or vehicle that's come through with you.

ii. WELCOME HOME

In honor of the first new arrivals to this empty little valley, the heads of the Houses have decided to set up a little party in the largest ballroom in the Castle. It's a simple gathering, primarily a feast with live music, dancing, and games. The ballroom is lit up with candles and strings of magical fairy lights, there is a large table lined with chairs and loaded with simple farm-to-table type foods - roast chicken and beef, baked and mashed potatoes, buttered and roasted vegetables, bread rolls and loaves of bread intricately braided into various shapes, several types of stews and curries made with goat, mutton, beef, and chicken served with flat fried breads, and an assortment of pastries, tarts, and cakes. To drink, there will be mulled wine and mead, beer and a few spirits, and a wide variety of juices and other non-alcoholic beverages. The crowning achievement is a small ice cream bar with various flavors of ice cream and chocolate and caramel sauces.

☆ a. CELEBRATIONS The rest of the room has been mostly cleared aside from some couches and armchairs set up around the edges of the room for people to rest in. Throughout the evening, several small bands play a variety of music meant for dancing and an entire large section of the room is dedicated to games - darts, tabletop sports games, cards, chess, and a game something like Pictionary or charades. Characters are welcome to mingle, dance, and play games with each other and with NPCs that will be more than willing to ask characters to dance or join them in a game.

☆ b. HOUSE PRESENTATIONS In a smaller room adjoining the ballroom, each of the Houses has set up a booth of sorts, meant to describe the interests and focus of each House as well as to demonstrate the types of magic that each house specializes in. Here, characters can observe mages from each House performing complicated spells or brewing potions and offering samples.

The spells performed will generally be complex, high-level spells intended to be impressive displays of what each House's magic can do. Characters can be temporarily changed into animals, have their worries erased for a few hours, become intangible, or be allowed to breathe underwater for a time, among many other types of fantastical spells. The samples of potions are good for an hour or so of effect and can cover a wide range of effects - intoxication and euphoria, enhanced luck, temporary infatuation, forced truth, the ability to speak to animals, and a host of other magical effects.

House booths are not recruiting, characters are not asked to join any of the Houses or ally with them, but they are showing off to try to tempt characters to sign up with their House to learn magic.

☆ c. SHARING IS CARING In another smaller room adjoining the ballroom, characters are invited to talk about their homes, show off their own abilities, or share something cultural from their own worlds. There will be a near-constant stream of interested NPCs as well as other characters who may watch or listen. Tell a folklore story from your country, perform a folk song, show off your superhuman abilities, or share anything else that reminds you of home in an enthusiastic sharing of culture.

iii. SECRET SIGNS

Towards the middle of the evening, a 'game' is announced - the Secret Signs. A magic spell will be cast on the room at large, and characters will find a glowing inscription above their heads that reveals a minor but relatable secret of theirs, or functions as a sort of 'shaming sign' betraying a minor relatable misbehavior that the character indulges in. These inscriptions will remain for a few hours, and characters are encouraged to mingle, observe other people's inscriptions, and try to find common ground in these inconsequential secrets or guilty pleasures.

However, the spell isn't perfect, so some characters may have no inscriptions, or false accusations or untrue secrets displayed and have to deal with the fallout of that. Alternately, if players wish it, deeper secrets or wrongdoings may be exposed completely by accident.

iv. GREENHOUSE INVASION

On the day after the party, a call goes out on the tablets for the assistance of anyone who's able - the Greenhouses, which provide most of the food for the current population, are being invaded by pests! These pests are rodents about the size of very large rats that like to eat the ripened fruit and vegetables that have taken months of careful cultivation to grow. They are exceptionally good at climbing and the females of the species are capable of short flights using little 'wings' similar to those of a flying squirrel. When they're cornered, they have a nasty bite that can cause people trying to catch them to experience extremely strange surreal hallucinations.

It's very important that these pests be cleared out of the Greenhouses, because they are the source of most of the foods that characters will be eating, especially considering it's mid to late winter and growing things outdoors won't be happening for a while. It's your first opportunity to really contribute to your new community!

v. NETWORK

Each character's tablet will light up at some point during the first few days and open a new entry with a blinking prompt: Tell everyone something about yourself. Where are you from? How old are you? What was your family like? What is your favorite food or color?

Or characters are welcome to post up their own network-based prompts.

Huh.

[At first he's concerned when the wolf shows up, but seeing it actually help and kill one of the pests leaves him impressed. He shrugs and throws one of the animals at it.]

There you go, got something you can play with.

[Every doggy needs a squeak toy.]
fishermansweater: (What now?)

[personal profile] fishermansweater 2021-12-28 07:00 am (UTC)(link)
Are there?

There aren't where I'm from. There's Districts, and the cities are numbered based on where they are in the district. The only city with a name is the Capitol.

[ But there's something in what she says that makes him need to read it over again. 'United States'. He knows that name. It's a long-ago name he heard in lessons about the origins of Panem. A name for part of Panem. That ... can't be right. ]

You're from the United States?
fishermansweater: (Artfully tousled)

sorry for delay, holidays were a Lot

[personal profile] fishermansweater 2021-12-28 03:26 pm (UTC)(link)
[ He's used to that sort of almost double-take, when people look at him and then look at him. He knows what assessment and admiration looks like, and he knows that everyone knows who he is -- or does in Panem, at least.

He also knows the difference between admiration and anything more intense. He flashes a grin to her, easygoing but without turning on the dazzling charm he can so easily muster. ]

So what sort of performer are you?

[ In many ways, he is one too. His whole life has been a performance for years. ]

[Dusty jumps a little onto his back feet as the man throws another critter to him, then gives it a good shake and tosses it to the side, lifting his head and wagging his tail.

More please!]
softmouth: (ponder)

[personal profile] softmouth 2021-12-28 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
[The fact she believes him and isn't immediately screaming about him being a monster is a kind of relief. But then a moment later, she's asking questions and-

And the questions are ridiculous.

He actually laughs slightly disbelievingly.]

Uh, I don't know what happens to them, but they're there when I change back, and not all torn up or whatever. And no, I can't talk with my snout! Wolf mouths aren't made to talk with.
softmouth: (warm)

[personal profile] softmouth 2021-12-28 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, it's no problem at all!

[Dusty doesn't flinch or anything when she puts her hand on his shoulder - he's a relaxed sort of person and he's not averse to touch or anything. The sigh of relief is a bit of a relief to him too because it means he's helping.]

Well, maybe you just have to get the hang of it before you can do cool stuff. And don't worry, you're not embarrassing yourself!

[A pause, and then-]

Where do you want to go? I mean, I suggest the food, it's pretty good.
scowlish: (avoidance)

[personal profile] scowlish 2021-12-28 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Strange monsters? What did they look like?

[Onni has at least studied more than Lalli has, so he might have an idea if Lalli describes them to him.

The idea of a world without the Rash has Onni reeling a little. Looking around, his eyes scan the forest edges that he can see beyond the clear walls of the greenhouse, and he's imagining going into them without fear of anything worse than a bear or an angry elk. It's a strange, hopeful sort of feeling, one he's not used to experiencing.]

Hn. Too bad, I guess.

[Onni is observant enough to notice that Lalli seems to be missing his friend, but he's not about to mention it.]

Did you have any sort of plan about getting rid of these rat things?
incinerating: (miffed)

[personal profile] incinerating 2021-12-28 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
[For a few moments, he stares at her as if she's grown a second head, because all of those things are perfectly normal where he comes from, and wouldn't need any explaining at all.

But apparently this girl is just uneducated or something.]

Trolls and Giants are not just fairy tales, thanks. I've fought them before. I even killed a Giant! With explosives! I don't know what the Amazon or the Congo are, but if they're forests they probably have the Rash in them.

[A little noise of frustration.]

The Rash is this disease, it infects people and turns them into monsters. Animals too. The only way to really get rid of it is to burn the forest down and make sure the infected animals and people and stuff are all dead so they can't spread more Rash. Then the trees grow back after, or you can build farms there for food and stuff.
incinerating: (okay)

[personal profile] incinerating 2021-12-28 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
We should, yeah. Uh.

[Glancing around, he sees a distinct lack of hoses or buckets of water and internally curses just a little bit. Stupid! Should've checked that before starting the fire!]

Is there a creek around here? And some buckets?
incinerating: (invested)

[personal profile] incinerating 2021-12-28 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh. Well that sounds really good then! I do like really sweet things though.
double_sharp: (undefined - Imgur (10))

that's okay! my graphics card died so i wasn't tagging much either

[personal profile] double_sharp 2021-12-29 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
Eh? A god?

[Oh. Does this guy mean idol in the literal sense? Riku shakes his head as he pats his chest.]

I'm not that kind of idol. Idols where I'm from are people who sing and dance, act, and sometimes model.

[So idolized entertainers. Which... yes, some people worship their idols like gods. Not that Riku thinks he would ever get to that level with anyone.]

Presentation is important! So keeping my asthma a secret is really important.
50millions1pint: (smirk)

[personal profile] 50millions1pint 2021-12-29 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
[Jake emits a delighted laugh, and pats Dusty's head.]

Good job, buddy! Shoulda found me a partner like you sooner, God knows that mutant fuckers keep spawning from everywhere where I'm from.
prodigalmess: (yep!)

[personal profile] prodigalmess 2021-12-31 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
So do I. Twizzlers were a major part of my diet back home.
softmouth: (picrew wolf: relaxed)

[personal profile] softmouth 2022-01-03 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
[Dusty soundly ignores the wolf's instincts all screaming that the wolf hates being patted on the head and pushes into it a little, mouth open and tongue lolling out the side as he appreciates the praise.

This guy seems nice enough. It's just a matter of figuring out how to explain the whole "I can be a wolf sometimes, but I'm actually a person" bit without giving away that he's a werewolf. It's not like he can go and walk back in and just resume conversation, right?

So instead, he just goes sniffing for another mutant rat, snagging it by the head and giving it a shake, adding it to the pile.]
incinerating: (miffed)

[personal profile] incinerating 2022-01-03 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
No meat? Or bread? Cake and candy are good but I couldn't go without those.
incinerating: (okay)

[personal profile] incinerating 2022-01-03 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, so you're a celebrity. I guess calling it 'idol' makes sense if you think about it like that.

[A shrug. So this guy is a celebrity, huh? Emil feels like he should be excited to be around him or something, but he's never seen what this guy can do, so maybe that takes the effect away.]

It wouldn't bother me if I knew a celebrity had asthma. But to each his own, I guess. So what do you do? Do you sing?
ribbonbon: (Aw gee)

[personal profile] ribbonbon 2022-01-03 08:57 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I'm pretty sure there must be billions of cities in my world. If I had to keep track of them all by number, I don't think I could ever remember which was which.

Yeah, I've lived in the United States for most of my life. My grandfather even complains that I'm "too American" sometimes!

Wait, does that mean you're from Earth, too?

[She figures he must be if he knows the United States. However everything else he's said doesn't make any sense to her. She's never heard of a country like that...]
treadswater: (all the patterns on the waves)

[personal profile] treadswater 2022-01-03 09:58 am (UTC)(link)
Annie doesn't reply at first. She's thinking. She's not like Finnick, who can read people and who gets people. She sees shadows when everything should be clear water, rips in lagoons. Not always, but when she's tired, when she's unsure, it's always worse. And she's very unsure currently.

But she's good at patterns. She's at analysis and game-design, and she's trying to piece this place together.

It's not working that well at the moment.

"I'm not sure," Annie says, finally. Most people would have assumed she'd lost the thread of the conversation, but Finnick can usually follow her. It helps that she's started eating it, and the 'curry' is nice. "It's something I think you could make a lot of, easily?" Which to a pair of District folk, says it's a meal to feed a lot of people at once. Which implies a District-type meal. "But I don't understand the spices. Unless their districts have different rules?"

Like discounts.
fishermansweater: (Artfully tousled)

[personal profile] fishermansweater 2022-01-03 03:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Finnick waits while Annie thinks; he knows well enough that sometimes she needs time to mull over words, especially when they're talking about things they need to talk around, the things it's not appropriate to say out loud, where they can be overheard. But they do have their own ways of talking to each other so that not everything needs to be said out loud.

He understands what she means. The information about the meal she'd been given had sounded like a lie, but Annie does have a point that meals that feed a lot of people at once are good for the large families that are common in the Districts. But he's also used to stews made with the finest of ingredients being saved only for the Capitol.

"I never learned enough about spices to know if that's possible," he muses. "I guess the only reason they're from District One is because that's where they're from. Do they have to be from ther?"

His voice is low, to keep the uncertainty in his tone from registering to anyone other than Annie. He doesn't know, and he doesn't think she knows, either. But she might have more suggestions.
silentscout: (43)

[personal profile] silentscout 2022-01-04 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
I threw one of them at you?

[The rats are totally monsters, just look at those extra bits!]

I can keep throwing them out. They can go somewhere else, or get eaten by birds.
silentscout: (95)

[personal profile] silentscout 2022-01-04 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
There's a pipe in the greenhouse. Use a plant pot!

[Those have holes in them. It's not going to be that great.]
prodigalmess: (question?)

[personal profile] prodigalmess 2022-01-04 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
I eat bread and some meats. No red meat.
fishermansweater: (Default)

[personal profile] fishermansweater 2022-01-04 01:34 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Fortunately, Finnick is already watching for the rodents when she wanders off; watching out for things is instinctive to him a lot of the time, as it is with a lot of the victors. He's watching, and he sees when one of them scampers through the door and across the floor towards his companion. He swats at it with his trident, sending it flying even though it's not one of the ones with wings.

He hears a thumping sound behind him and shoots a glance backwards to see what's happened. It's not obvious at a glance, until she reappears with a hand on her head like she's rubbing an injury. More important, though, is the twine she's found. ]

Yeah. That's good. I can make a snare or net out of pretty much anything. If we can set up some bait I should be able to hook up a trap.
fishermansweater: (I saw the scoreboard)

[personal profile] fishermansweater 2022-01-04 02:18 pm (UTC)(link)
We don't have that many cities. Just a handful in each District.

[ There's a pause before the next message, as though Finnick had to think, hard, about exactly how to say what he wanted to say. And in fact, that's exactly why, because it's not just the names of cities that don't make sense anymore. ]

Nobody's used the name "United States" for hundreds of years.

[ Or at least, that's what he's been told. That's what they've all been told, in their schools in Panem.

And there aren't billions of cities. There are the handful of cities in each of the Districts, and the Capitol, and that's it. The others were all destroyed, by the wars and disasters that changed the world as it once was and left only Panem. ]
treadswater: (pearls don't come from coal...)

[personal profile] treadswater 2022-01-05 08:34 am (UTC)(link)
"Well, I guess... I mean, home's not the only place fish are gonna live, is it?"

Annie isn't going to believe much of what the Capitol tells her about how things are. Not in the sense of, 'this is the only way'. Not if fish are any indication.

And this isn't saying anything against the Capitol. She's not saying that the districts are bad, just that food can be from anywhere.

And speaking of food, Annie continues to eat her meal. It's food, it's good food, warm and filling, and this place may not feel like an arena, but food is food and food is important. She's not gonna eat enough to be sick, but if food is on offer, she's going to take advantage of it.
